It’s already October and we know everyone is excited about Halloween and maybe curious about “the day of the dead” (Día de Muertos) celebrated on November 2nd in Mexico! So instead of talking about bridal hairstyles and makeup; we decided to step away from the wedding scene and focus on La Catrina Makeup!
La Catrina, also known as the “Sugar Skull” is an iconic Mexican character created by Mexican cartoonist José Posada about 100 years ago and popularized by Diego Rivera’s paintings.
And because we live in Playa del Carmen and we love to celebrate the Day of The Dead (as in many other parts of Mexico) … “La Catrina” is our favorite holiday makeup!
What do you need to achieve the look?
Black Eyeliner (pencil)
Different makeup colors (white, black, yellow, purple, red, or blue)
Sequins or glitter
Large false eyelashes
Big flowers for a flower crown or a side ponytail with flowers.
You can be just as authentic to the character by painting your face white, or you can give it a little twist and make your face glowy-white for a more nude look.
Another twist on the traditional Catrina makeup is to go a bit creepy or draw some flowers and accentuate your natural beauty on the “lively” side of the makeup.
Although the Catrina cartoon initially was a mockery of the Mexicans, who rejected their own cultural heritage and pretended to belong to a different social class. Today it’s a figure who proudly represents folklore and Mexican culture, honoring the memory of those who have died and reminding us that it doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor, in the end, we are all equal.
Happy Halloween and Happy Día de Muertos! We hope you enjoy the festivities! More colorful Catrinas here
