It’s October now, and we know everybody must be getting excited about Halloween at the end of the month! And also “the day of the dead” (Día de muertos) the 1st of November! So instead of talking about bridal hair and make up we have decided to to drift a little bit away from the wedding scene and just focus on Halloween and Día de Muertos theme make up!
So we have decided to talk about the Catrina (some of you might know it as sugar skull), but the Catrina is an iconic Mexican character created by the Mexican cartoon artist Jose Posada about 100 years ago, and popularized by Diego Rivera’s paintings.
And of course, since we are based in the Mexican Caribbean and we also love celebrating the day of the dead… well “The Catrina” is of course our favorite make up for the holidays!
What do you need to achieve the look?
Black Eyeliner (pencil)
Face paint of various colors (white, black, yellow, red, or blue)
Spangle or glitter
Large fake eyelashes.
Large flowers for a flower crown or a side ponytail with flowers.
You can be as authentic to the character painting your face white or you can give it a little twist and just make your face glowy-white for a more nude look!
Another twist to the traditional Catrina make up is going hafsies on it, draw a couple of flowers and emphasize your natural beauty in the “alive” side of the make up.
Although in the beginning la Catrina cartoon was indeed a mockery of Mexicans who denied their own cultural heritage and pretended to be of a different social class, today is a character that proudly represents Mexican folklore and culture honoring the memory of those who have passed away and remind us that no matter if you where rich or poor in the end we are all the same.
Happy Halloween and happy día de muertos! We hope you enjoy the festivities!
